VERSE:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
— Matthew 5:3
THOUGHT:
The word “poor” does not merely suggest “broke”. The word in the Greek is “ptochos” which literally means “a beggar”. It is the opposite of self-sufficient. It is used to describe someone who has no other choice but to put their hope of living in the mercy of another. This is the type of spirit we are to have when approaching God. When we come to God, we are like the beggar whose only source of life would have been an unmerited slice of bread, yet instead the King invited him into His banquet hall and put His signet ring on him.
APPLICATION:
Approach God with the understanding that apart from His mercy, you have no chance of living. Thank God for not only giving us what we needed to escape hell, but for giving us far beyond anything we could think or imagine; namely His Son, Jesus Christ.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your mercy and grace. I acknowledge that apart from you, I have nothing; and with you, I have everything. Help me to show others the good things that I have in you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
