VERSE:
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
— Matthew 5:8
THOUGHT:
When the bible speaks of our “heart”, it usually refers to our mind, will and emotions. Thayer’s Greek Definitions says that this word “kardia” can mean “the soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”. It speaks of what our affections and desires are fixed on.
For the most part, what do you focus on throughout the day? What is the foundation of your passions and endeavors? Are you pursuing that which is pure and eternal, or empty and temporal? This verse says that a pure heart is a characteristic of a true believer (one who will see God). A pure heart belongs to someone whose thoughts are constantly focused on Jesus Christ.
APPLICATION:
Fix your heart on God. Ask Him to create in you a pure heart so that your mind, will and emotions would be enveloped by God.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, create in me a pure heart. Surround my desires and thoughts with images of your glory. Captivate me with your purity. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
