Christian Hedonism

Spread the love

VERSE:
The Lord said to Aaron, “you will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.”
— Numbers 18:20

THOUGHT:
A man went to his pastor and said with an upset tone “pastor, I tried tithing and it didn’t work”. The pastor asked “well, did the Lord get 10% of your income?” “YES!” the man exclaimed. The pastor replied “well then it worked!” The point of the story is that often times we try to use God as a means to an end, when God Himself is the end. When the Lord told Aaron “you will have no inheritance in the land… I am your share and your inheritance” do you think Aaron was disappointed? Would you be disappointed? What if you found out that coming to Christ would get you absolutely nothing other than Him? Would He still be enough? A more important question to help expose our motives of coming to Christ would be this: if you could have heaven (whatever you picture perfect eternal bliss to be), and you could be in heaven with all of the people that you love on earth, would you be satisfied even if Jesus wasn’t there?

APPLICATION:
Constantly remind yourself of the great treasure and inheritance you have in Christ, which is Christ Himself. Develop contentment with the Lord being your portion. Ask God to fill you with the understanding of who He is so that satisfaction in Him would increase.

“God is most glorified in us, when we are most satisfied in Him” – John Piper

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, I come to you with no hidden intentions or ulterior motives – I want you. I thank you that you yourself are my inheritance. Lord give me understanding of who you are so that my contentment and satisfaction in you would increase. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
