Clinging to Idols

Spread the love

VERSE:
Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.
—Jonah 2:8

THOUGHT:
What are you clinging to? What are you affections set towards? Is Jesus your life, or an accessory to your life? God is to be preeminent in our lives, and an idol is anything that we set in His place. The words “worthless idols” in the Greek means “lying emptiness”. Whatever we deem as more important than God in our lives just leads to emptiness and vanity. The word “forfeit” in the original language is “azab” meaning to relinquish, forsake, or loosen; giving the impression that God’s grace is readily available and being offered to us, yet we deny it and push it away. When we allow things to be set up in place of God, we forfeit God’s grace. Most of the time, the greatest idol is ourselves.

APPLICATION:
Take inventory of your life, and ask yourself “am I putting myself, my family, my entertainment, my job… (fill in the blank) in a place of preeminence in my life rather than God?” Ask God to reveal areas in your life that may have taken His place, and smash those idols. Pray that God gives you a burning passion for Him

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, please search me and reveal to me areas in my life that I have allowed to take your place, and give me the strength to turn from them to you. I ask that you birth inside of me a passion that never allows anything other than you to have preeminence in my life. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
