VERSE:
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong. Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words.
— Ecclesiastes 5:1-3
THOUGHT:
We have accepted in America a form of Christianity devoid of reverence for God. Some have made the name of the Lord so common that He is reduced down to being like their little buddy. Some are quick to jump into prayer without realizing who this God is that they are approaching.
He is a holy God. He is a mighty God – so esteemed that at the mere mention of His Name, mountains tremble. The Old Testament priests had to tie a rope around their waste when they entered into the presence of God in case they were struck down and died because of His holiness. They would refer to Him as “The Name” because they dared not speak His name in vain.
Today’s verse is a good reminder of how it is we are to approach God.
APPLICATION:
Do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. Since God’s in heaven and you are on earth, let your words to Him be few. Don’t offer Him the speech of fools with many words. Stand in Awe of God and reverence His majesty.
PRAYER:
Holy Father, forgive me for so many times speaking of you, and to you nonchalantly. Forgive me for my lack of reverence. Create in me a clearer picture of your holiness. Lord, I stand in awe of you. Jesus, I thank you for tearing the veil, giving me direct access to the holy of holies – I pray that you would help me not take it for granted. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
