On hearing [Jesus’ teaching], many of His disciples said, “this is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
— John 6:60
The truth is hard. The gospel cuts. Jesus’ words are not easy on the flesh. Yet, so many people take the teeth right out of the gospel in order to be less offensive and so that people would accept the message. However, Jesus didn’t do that. He kept the gospel offensive knowing that even his own disciples would reject it and desert Him, never to follow Him again (John 6:66). When we take the edge off of the blade of God’s word, all we are left with is a watered down, toothless message that cannot convert a sinner, but rather leave a sinner with the false assurance that he is saved.
Speak God’s word, God’s way, no matter what people think or say about it and leave the results to Him. Don’t water down the truth to make it more acceptable to sinners.
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have been ashamed to speak the hard truth of the gospel to people for fear that they would reject it. Give me courage to speak your word, your way, and give me the humility to leave the results to you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
