VERSE:
in the first year of [Darius’] reign, I, Daniel, understood from the Scriptures, according to the word of the Lord given to Jeremiah the prophet, that the desolation of Jerusalem would last seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with Him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes.
— Daniel 9:2-3
THOUGHT:
All history is to be interpreted by the larger picture of what God is doing to fulfill His purposes. Daniel saw the times, read the scriptures, and understood his lot in life within the context of God’s story. Daniel knew that God had decreed Jerusalem’s desolation would only last 70 years; but instead of just passively waiting for God to fulfill His plan, Daniel decided to be a part of God’s plan. He moved to action understanding that God fulfills His purposes through His people.
APPLICATION:
Understanding what the scriptures say about the times we are living in helps us understand what the content of our life should look like. Read the bible while asking the question “where am I in the bigger picture of God’s story and what should I do in light of my place in history?” Don’t passively wait for God to fulfill His purpose in the earth, but actively be a part of it
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, help me understand the times that I am living in. Help me interpret my place in history by the scriptures, and reveal to me what I am to do with my life every day. Help me to be actively involved in bringing about your purposes in the earth. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
