VERSE:
I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.
— Psalm 119:100
THOUGHT:
A lot of people in the church want to grow in their understanding and gain wisdom, and they go about doing so by reading books, joining classes, listening to preaching, finishing programs, etc… Though these things can be very beneficial, by themselves they will not merit understanding. It doesn’t matter how many verses you can quote, how many books you have read, how many degrees you have acquired, or how many classes you have taught. Wisdom comes after submission. Understanding comes after obeying. The Psalmist said that he had understanding, which surpassed the understanding of his elders, because of obedience to God’s precepts.
APPLICATION:
In your alone time with God in His word, intentionally look for ways that the word can be applied to your life. Make your daily reading habit consist of looking for opportunities to grow in your obedience to God.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, help me to find application in your word. When I read the bible, help me understand how I can directly apply what I have read to my life. Give me an open mind for correction, and help me grow in my obedience to your precepts. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
