For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
— Matthew 6:21
I had always thought of this verse as if it were written backwards. I believed that it was basically saying “if your heart is really set in heaven, it will show by how you spend your money”. But that’s not what this verse is saying. It is not saying that your treasure will follow your heart, but rather that your heart will follow your treasure.
Our purpose as Christ followers is to extend His glory and spread His gospel to the ends of the earth. A lot of times our hearts are not set on that purpose. Jesus tells us that if we put our treasure towards that purpose, then our hearts will line up with His. If you want to have a greater burden for the lost, invest into evangelistic ministries. If you want a greater burden for Israel, invest your treasure into Jewish outreach. If you want to care more for the poor, start spending your money to feed the hungry. It’s funny how much you will find yourself praying for ministries that you are investing your resources in.
If you are not already doing so, start investing into Christ exalting ministries. Start spending your treasure on things that God’s heart is set on, and watch how your heart will follow.
Heavenly Father, reveal to me those areas or ministries in which you want me to invest the resources that you have blessed me with into. As my treasure is spent on Christ exalting work throughout the world, I pray that you shape my heart to follow His. In Jesus’ Name I pray, AMEN!
